Flemish Language

Flemish or Belgian Dutch is the Dutch language as spoken in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium.  It is the standard in schools, government and the media and used informally in daily speech, "tussentaal". There are four principal Dutch dialects in Flanders: Brabantian (including Antwerpish), East Flemish, West Flemish, and Limburgish. The latter two are sometimes considered separate languages.

It is estimated that around 5.5 million people, about 55% of the population, in Belgium and a few thousand people in France speaks Flemish. Flemish is closely related to Dutch and was even recognised as Belgian Variant of Dutch. Flemish is actually not an official language, it is a dialect or a variety of dialects. Most Flemish are not pleased that Flemish is referred to as a dialect.

Flemish power of attorney translation

Flemish also are not partial to the fact that their language is called Dutch. They see Dutch as a language that is not very expressive. On the other hand, many Dutch people believe that the Flemish language is overly colourful and is a bit of a funny little language.  Oh, the healthy rivalries between countries!

Dutch and Flemish language speak many variations of the language. For example, the language in Brussels is different from what one may hear in New York. Cockney and Geordie have different sounds as well. Most people in the Netherlands pronounce [g] in a very hard way, while the Flemish will pronounce the [g] in a much softer and subdued tone.  However, the [g] and the [h] sounds vary depending on region. This is also true of the pronunciation of the letter [r].  For example, in Netherlands, the sound of this letter is more closely aligned with how English would say [r], in Flanders, the sound can be thought of as more of a rolling [r].

Linguistically, Flemish is sometimes used as a term for the language of the former County of Flanders, especially West Flemish. However, as a result of political emancipation of the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, the combined culture of that region, consisting of West Flanders, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Antwerp, Limburg and Brussels has come to be known as 'Flemish'.  Despite the name, Brabantian and in particular its Antwerp dialect is the dominant contributor to the Belgian tussentaal.  The only official language in Flanders is Dutch.

The Chinese language comprises a number of different dialects with Mandarin, Cantonese being the most prevalent.  Mandarin has almost 900 million native speakers.  Your Chinese interpreter must understand that spoken Chinese has a great amount of internal differences.  The common factor is that all spoken varieties of Chinese are both tonal and analytic.

When performing Chinese interpreting, it is important to understand the regional groups. It is estimated that Mandarin has approximately 880 million with Wu approximately 100 million and Min at approximately 75 million and Cantonese at approximately 75 million. Chinese (Simplified, Traditional)

Chinese Australia accurate translation

China is a huge continent, 9,326,410 square kilometres and the water area is about 270,550 square kilometres. Total size of China is about 9,596,960 square kilometres. China is approximately one-fifth of the world's population, or over one billion people, speak some form of Chinese as their native language. Chinese is a group of related language varieties, several of which are not mutually intelligible. Collectively, Chinese has been described as a language family. Originally the indigenous speech of the Han majority in China

Native Chinese speakers recognize the varieties of Chinese as dialects of a single Chinese language, rather than separate languages. However, some linguists and sinologists believe this grouping is not appropriate. The core diversity of Chinese is comparable to Romance languages, although all varieties of Chinese are tonal and analytic. There are between 7 and 13 main regional groups of Chinese-depending on classification scheme-- of which the most spoken, by a wide-margin is Mandarin (about 960 million), followed by Wu (80 million), Yue (60 million) and Min (50 million). It is hard to believe, however, most of these languages are mutually unintelligible. Although some, such as Xiang and the Southwest Mandarin dialects, may share common terms and some degree of intelligibility.

Standard Chinese (Putonghua / Guoyu / Huayu) is a standardized form of spoken Chinese and is based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin Chinese. It is the official language of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC, also known as Taiwan). In addition, it is one of four official languages of Singapore and one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Of the other varieties of Chinese, Cantonese (the prestige variety of Yue) is influential in Guangdong province and is one of the official languages of Hong Kong, English is another official language, and in Macau where both Chinese and Portuguese are the official languages. Min Nan, part of the Min group, is widely spoken in southern Fujian, in neighbouring Taiwan, where it is known as Taiwanese or Hoklo, and in Southeast Asia, also known as Hokkien in the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. There are also sizeable Hakka and Shanghainese dispersions, for example in Taiwan, where most Hakka communities are also conversant in Taiwanese and Standard Chinese.

Simplified Chinese (or Chinese Simplified):

The Chinese written text, frequently referred to as “modern form” was established in 1949 by P.R. China and is used in mainland China and Singapore today. Modern form was developed and implemented by the Chinese government with a goal to increase literacy among its people.   Modern form Chinese was easier to write and learn than Traditional Chinese.

Traditional Chinese (or Chinese Traditional):

The written Chinese text that is commonly used in Hong Kong and Taiwan today is the text, as the name implies, that has been written by Chinese people for thousands of years. People in Mainland China and Singapore began to adopt the Simplified text after 1949, the people in Hong Kong and Taiwan continued to use the traditional form. This divergence is largely due to political separation reasons.

The Kangxi Dictionary is a resource and reference for traditional Chinese characters. The shapes of traditional Chinese characters first appeared with the emergence of the clerical script during the Han Dynasty, and have been more or less a present since the 5th century during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.

Chinese immigrants living in Australian, USA and Canadian are predominately immigrating from mainland China and as a result, printed materials is generally written in Simplified Chinese characters. An exception is many overseas Chinese online newspapers allow users to switch between both Traditional and Simplified Chinese versions. In contrast, in Mainland China, only Simplified Chinese characters are used in official publications. The debate between Simplified and Traditional Chinese has been brewing since the establishment of Simplified Chinese and the topic continues to be widely debated throughout China and among Chinese communities.

Simplified Chinese Translation – the new system?

So what are the differences between Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese? The Simplified Chinese writing system differs in two ways (1) a reduction of the number of strokes per character and (2) the reduction of the number of characters in common use. Two different characters are now written with the same character. Although the majority of the population uses Simplified Chinese there is a movement towards returning to Traditional Chinese.

Traditional Chinese Translation – a return to the old.

The repeal of the Second Scheme in 1977 sparked the movement to revert back to Traditional Chinese. Simplified Chinese Characters may become less differentiated from each other and as a result of simplification of their shape. Traditional Chinese provides more legibility and distinctiveness. In addition, Traditional Chinese provides more guidance for pronunciation. Traditional Chinese also allows the use of writings before 1956, as well as writings from outside mainland China.

Traditional Chinese characters are seen throughout the region; advertisements, slogans, signs, and even television subtitles. A large portion of universities has switched to using and teaching Traditional Chinese because people were not able to understand the Simplified Chinese from neighbours such as Hong Kong and Taiwan.

When to Use Traditional Chinese Translation or Simplified Chinese Translation
Understand your target audience. If your target audience resides in mainland China or Singapore, then Simplified Chinese is the way to go. Traditional Chinese is used if one is targeting readers based in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Malaysia.

Burmese Language

Burmese, the native language of Bamar and its sub-ethnic groups such as the Mon, is Burma’s official language.

Approximately 42 million people speak Burmese. It is the first language of 32 million people and the second language of 10 million people, including Burmese minorities and people from neighbouring countries. The “Myanmar language” is the name officially recognized by the Burmese Constitution, though most English people still refer to it as the “Burmese language.”

Burmese Melbourne health care

Burmese belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language group, which is a subgroup of the Sino-Tibetan branch of languages. Its script is derived from Old Mon script, which is again derived from Brāhmī script. The language is mostly monosyllabic with a subject-object-verb word order. It is also a tonal (pitch-register based on the variation of the tone) and syllable-timed language, giving equal prominence to each and every syllable.

Unlike English word order, which is subject-verb-object, Burmese word order is subject-object-verb. Subjects and objects are omitted when implied in context. As a rule, all objects must be attached to a -go particle. Burmese has an array of honorifics. The Burmese often use family names such as “brother”, “sister”, and “auntie” in place of “you” and “I”. Its grammar also contains many prefixes and suffixes which indicate tense and mood.

Burmese is a tonal language consisting of four tones: low, high, creaky, and checked. All dialects of Burmese in Myanmar adhere to this rule, although vocabulary usage varies from region to region.

Burmese is written using the Burmese script, which is based on an ancient Indian script called Pali. Its alphabet contains 34 letters, which look like circles or semi-circles. The Burmese script also contains many tone marks and sound-modifying marks. Burmese uses an English-based Romanisation system.

Cambodian (Khmer) Language

The official language of Cambodia and the Khmer people is Cambodian, or Khmer. It is the second most widely used Austroasiatic language (the first being Vietnamese), spoken by ten million people. The Khmer language’s Sanskrit and Pali influences were to some extent a result of the spread of Hinduism and Buddhism in Cambodia. Khmer is prided with being written and recorded earlier than the Mon-Khmer family of languages, even before Mon and Vietnamese. In fact, Thai, Vietnamese, Laotian, and the Chinese languages were all influenced by the Khmer language, and vice-versa. This intermixing was inevitable due to the close geographical proximities and similar cultural backgrounds, which resulted in a linguistic convergence in the Southeast Asian region.

An analytic and isolating language, Khmer does not have any conjugations, inflections, or case endings, but has particles and auxiliary words for grammatical relationships. Similar to Burmese, Khmer also follows the subject-object-verb word order. But unlike Burmese, the Khmer word patterns have a minor syllable succeeded by main syllable, similar to Mon-Khmer.

Cambodian interpreting services

Khmer is not a tonal language; therefore, it differs from its neighbouring languages such as Thai, Burmese, Laotian, and Vietnamese, which are all tonal languages. The script of the language is written with an abugida, which is known in Khmer as អក្សរខ្មែរ.

The Cambodian script uses what are called Khmer letters, all probably derived from various forms of the ancient Brahmi script of Southern India. The Cambodian script has symbols for thirty-three consonants, twenty-four dependent vowels, twelve independent vowels, and several diacritic symbols. Most consonants have reduced or modified forms, called sub-consonants, when they occur as the second member of a consonant cluster. Vowels may be written before, after, over, or even under a consonant symbol.

Some efforts to standardise Khmer spelling have been attempted, but inconsistencies persist, and many words have more than one accepted spelling. A two-volume dictionary prepared under the direction of the Venerable Chuon Nath of the Buddhist Institute in Phnom Penh is the standard work on Khmer lexicography.

Over time, Khmer writing has been made much more complex and difficult to read due to the addition of letters and extra swirls and lines to the letters. The original Hindi language is a root language not only of Khmer, but also of Thai, Laotian, and Burmese. While the written system of the language has many similarities throughout all of these countries, the numbers are strikingly similar or even identical.

Khmer is written from left to right, top to bottom, withnospacesbetweenthewords, and with very little punctuation. There are three styles of writing: a script type which is used in handwriting, a block form used in books, magazines, and newspapers, and a rounded style used on signs, titles of books and magazines, and in official documents or formal invitations.

The spoken language has no regional dialects, but the people from the countryside do speak a little differently than the people in the cities.
