Croatian Language

Croatian is a standardized variety of the Serbo-Croatian language used by Croats, principally in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbian province of Vojvodina and other neighbouring countries. It is the official and literary language of Croatia and one of the official languages of the European Union. Croatian is also one of the official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring countries.

Today, the Croatian language is spoken by approximately 6 million people, primarily in the country of Croatia where it serves as the official national language. The Croatian language also is spoken in nearby Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and Italy.

The written Croatian language, in about the 9th century, is believed to have started when Old Slavonic was adopted as the religious language of choice. The first known Croatian literary text dates from approximately the 12th century AD.

accurate Croatian translation

It was not until the early 19th century that a standardised written Croatian language, based on Latin script, was developed. This a movement, spearheaded by Croatian national Ljudevit Gaj. from 1830, Gaj led the Illyrian movement which chose the Stokavian dialect as the basis for a standardised written Croatian language.

Standardised Croatian is based on the most widespread dialect of Serbo-Croatian, Shtokavian, more specifically on Eastern Herzegovinian, which is also the basis of Standard Serbian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin. The other Serbo-Croatian dialects spoken by Croats are Chakavian, Kajkavian, and Torlakian (by the Krashovani). Cakavian is spoken mostly along the Croatian coast and on the Adriatic islands, while Kajkavian is spoken primarily in the north of Croatia. The rest of the region generally uses the Stokavian dialect.

These four dialects, and the four national standards, are usually subsumed under the term "Serbo-Croatian" in English, though this term is controversial for native speakers, and paraphrases such as "Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian" are therefore sometimes used instead, especially in diplomatic circles.

The Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian languages are all very similar when spoken. In fact, American, British, and Australian English are less similar to one another than Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian languages. All three languages share three primary dialects and differ primarily in vocabulary. However, the substantial differences exist in the written language as the Serbian language uses a Cyrillic alphabet while the Croatian language is based on the Latin alphabet.

The modern Croatian literary language developed during the 19th century. In the year 1850, the Vienna Agreement established the Stokavian dialect, which is common to Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian, as the basis of a uniform literary language for all three languages.

The full effect of the significance of the Vienna Agreement was not felt until the late 19th century, however, when a number of official grammar texts, orthographies, and dictionaries of the language known as Serbo-Croatian were published.

After the collapse of Yugoslavia, successor countries such as Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia turned to language as one way of reaffirming distinct ethnic identities. In the Croatian language, measures were taken to rid the language of the Serbian influence it had felt since the Vienna Agreement of 1850. Even today, Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian speakers often emphasise the differences of these languages largely because of the complicated political, cultural, and religious history of the region.

Croatian recently, on 1st July, 2013, became a member of the European Union. Croatia opened the doors for its people to have all the benefits and access to all information that the European Union provides. For more information, see Translationz blog post here.

Czech Language

Czech is a West Slavic language with about 12 million native speakers and the primary language in the Czech Republic and spoken by Czechs worldwide. The language was known as Bohemian in English until the late 19th century. Czech is similar to and mutually intelligible with Slovak, the Sorbian languages and, to a lesser extent, with other Slavic languages.

Unlike its East Slavic relatives such as Russian and Serbian, the Czech language's writing system is based on the Latin alphabet instead of the Cyrillic and contains a total of 42 letters.

 Czech fast accurate translation

The religious reformer Jan Hus, who lived from 1369 to 1415 is believed to the primary force behind the establishment of the Czech writing system.  He is also the figurehead behind the writing systems for Slovak and Sorbian. According to Omniglot, Hus "created the system of having one grapheme (letter) for every phoneme (sound) in the language by adding accents to some of the letters." If you compare then the spelling conventions in Czech to those found in its Slavic cousin Polish (which was not impacted by Hus' innovations), you will notice a big difference. Omniglot points to the following example: "in Czech the sound ch, as in church, is written č, but the same sound is written cz in Polish." Thus the diacritic mark placed on the č makes it possible to represent a sound not found in any of the individual letters of the Latin alphabet.

Czech is widely spoken by most inhabitants of the Czech Republic. As given by appropriate laws, courts and authorities can enact and write out documents and judgements in the Czech language (also, financial authorities in the Slovak language). Czech can also be used in all official proceedings in Slovakia as granted by Article 6 of Slovak Minority Language Act 184/1999 Zb.

According to article 37, paragraph 4 of Charter of Fundamental Rights and Basic Freedoms people who do not speak Czech have the right to an interpreter in a court of law. Instructions for use in Czech must be added to all marketed goods. The right to one's own language is guaranteed by the Constitution for all national and ethnic minorities.

Czech is also one of the 23 official languages in the European Union (since May 2004).

Flemish Language

Flemish or Belgian Dutch is the Dutch language as spoken in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium.  It is the standard in schools, government and the media and used informally in daily speech, "tussentaal". There are four principal Dutch dialects in Flanders: Brabantian (including Antwerpish), East Flemish, West Flemish, and Limburgish. The latter two are sometimes considered separate languages.

It is estimated that around 5.5 million people, about 55% of the population, in Belgium and a few thousand people in France speaks Flemish. Flemish is closely related to Dutch and was even recognised as Belgian Variant of Dutch. Flemish is actually not an official language, it is a dialect or a variety of dialects. Most Flemish are not pleased that Flemish is referred to as a dialect.

Flemish employment certificate

Flemish also are not partial to the fact that their language is called Dutch. They see Dutch as a language that is not very expressive. On the other hand, many Dutch people believe that the Flemish language is overly colourful and is a bit of a funny little language.  Oh, the healthy rivalries between countries!

Dutch and Flemish language speak many variations of the language. For example, the language in Brussels is different from what one may hear in New York. Cockney and Geordie have different sounds as well. Most people in the Netherlands pronounce [g] in a very hard way, while the Flemish will pronounce the [g] in a much softer and subdued tone.  However, the [g] and the [h] sounds vary depending on region. This is also true of the pronunciation of the letter [r].  For example, in Netherlands, the sound of this letter is more closely aligned with how English would say [r], in Flanders, the sound can be thought of as more of a rolling [r].

Linguistically, Flemish is sometimes used as a term for the language of the former County of Flanders, especially West Flemish. However, as a result of political emancipation of the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, the combined culture of that region, consisting of West Flanders, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Antwerp, Limburg and Brussels has come to be known as 'Flemish'.  Despite the name, Brabantian and in particular its Antwerp dialect is the dominant contributor to the Belgian tussentaal.  The only official language in Flanders is Dutch.
