State Government Curriculum & Assessment Authority
Client: State Government Curriculum & Assessment Authority
Client Background: A particular State Government Curriculum and Assessment Authority oversees curriculum development, student assessment and accreditation of educational programmes in schools. They ensure the curriculum meets standards, assess student achievement and accredit qualifications such as the Certificate of Education, which provide professional development for educators. They are the statutory authority of the State Government responsible for the development and appropriate delivery of kindergarten, primary and secondary education. Their role is pivotal in maintaining educational quality and preparing students for future pursuits.
The Project: The client partnered with Translationz to accurately translate students’ work word for word without altering the grammar, to evaluate and grade.
Services Provided: Document Translations, Onsite interpreters, Professional Proofreading & Editing
Languages: German, Japanese, Italian, French, Spanish, Chinese
Challenges: The State Curriculum & Assessment Authority often needs documents translated to English from multiple languages, such as German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
The client requires translations of the students’ work and assignments that were to be graded, so the translations need to remain faithful to the source text This means that these translations must be accurate and reflect the students’ original answers, without altering them for clarity. Additionally, any mistakes made by the student must also be mirrored in the translation. A further challenge faced was that much of the text we receive is handwritten, so deciphering the source text was a recurrent difficulty.
In addition to translation of handwritten text, we were also tasked with translating audio files where students had provided spoken answers to exam questions. In some cases, the audio in the files was not clear, and our translators had to listen intently to understand what was said, and subsequently translate it to the best of their ability.
In delivering NAATI-certified language services, we encountered several challenges that required careful management and expertise. One significant challenge lies in maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and linguistic fidelity across diverse languages such as German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese during proofreading and editing processes. Each language presents unique nuances and cultural contexts that must be meticulously preserved.
Additionally, the timely completion of projects poses another challenge, especially when handling extensive audio and video excerpts for translation. Ensuring prompt delivery within 2-3 business days, as required by our clients, demands efficient project management and coordination among our skilled translators. Moreover, managing client expectations for quality and turnaround times amidst varying project scopes and complexities remains a constant consideration. Despite these challenges, our dedicated team remains committed to overcoming them through rigorous quality control measures and leveraging our expertise in NAATI-certified translations to consistently deliver exceptional results.
Solutions: We ensured that our translators were fully briefed on the purpose of this client’s translations, that they were required for educational purposes, and that the source text should be closely mirrored in the target language to allow the client to grade the texts accurately. With this in mind, the translators produced texts in English which were completed with utmost fidelity to the original text, preserving the context and intent of the author, and delivering the client with a target text that fits the purpose they intended i.e. for grading the students’ work.
During the process of this project, we were in constant communication with the client and could seek clarification or check preferences in challenging situations such as where the handwriting was difficult to decipher, or audio not clear. We feel it is important to keep an open conversation with the client, particularly in cases where the translation process is not straightforward.
By working with NAATI-certified translators with the highest professional credentials, we are ensuring that the work is carried out by professionals with the required qualifications and knowledge, who will deliver in a timely manner and meet the high expectations of our client.
