The Project: Translation of medical consent forms and patient information sheets into eleven languages. Translated to the required languages and then back translated to English, to allow for optimal communication between staff and patients.

We translated the consent forms and patient information sheets; approximately 10,000 words across the nine documents, into the eleven chosen languages and then carried out back translations to English.

Languages: Cantonese/Traditional Chinese, Mandarin/Simplified Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish, Italian, Tagalog, Japanese, Samoan

Documents: Consent Forms and Patient Information Sheets

Challenge: The Queensland Department of Health needed consent forms and patient information sheets in multiple languages to enhance accessibility to crucial patient safety information for non-English speaking communities. Translationz needed to produce accurate and exact translations to ensure that consent forms and information sheets are accessible to non-English speaking patients.

Solution: To address this challenge, the Queensland Department of Health partnered with Translationz. We produced consent forms and patient information sheets that were clear and accessible in the required target languages. These translations were also then back translated to English, as requested by the client, to ensure that the target texts accurately mirrored the source texts. To ensure the information is accurate and appropriate in the target languages, the work was completed by NAATI translators and edits to the translations were made as necessary following review of the back translations.

Accomplishments: This project highlights the importance of professional language services in healthcare. By collaborating with Translationz to deliver accurate and culturally sensitive translations, Queensland Department of Health are able to improve communication with non-English speaking patients to ensure patients’ safety and to help deliver better health services. We successfully produced consent forms and patient information sheets into eleven languages, enhancing accessibility to crucial patient safety information for non-English speaking communities.
