Burmese, the native language of Bamar and its sub-ethnic groups such as the Mon, is Burma’s official language.
Approximately 42 million people speak Burmese. It is the first language of 32 million people and the second language of 10 million people, including Burmese minorities and people from neighbouring countries. The “Myanmar language” is the name officially recognized by the Burmese Constitution, though most English people still refer to it as the “Burmese language.”
Burmese belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language group, which is a subgroup of the Sino-Tibetan branch of languages. Its script is derived from Old Mon script, which is again derived from Brāhmī script. The language is mostly monosyllabic with a subject-object-verb word order. It is also a tonal (pitch-register based on the variation of the tone) and syllable-timed language, giving equal prominence to each and every syllable.
Unlike English word order, which is subject-verb-object, Burmese word order is subject-object-verb. Subjects and objects are omitted when implied in context. As a rule, all objects must be attached to a -go particle. Burmese has an array of honorifics. The Burmese often use family names such as “brother”, “sister”, and “auntie” in place of “you” and “I”. Its grammar also contains many prefixes and suffixes which indicate tense and mood.
Burmese is a tonal language consisting of four tones: low, high, creaky, and checked. All dialects of Burmese in Myanmar adhere to this rule, although vocabulary usage varies from region to region.
Burmese is written using the Burmese script, which is based on an ancient Indian script called Pali. Its alphabet contains 34 letters, which look like circles or semi-circles. The Burmese script also contains many tone marks and sound-modifying marks. Burmese uses an English-based Romanisation system.
