    Portuguese Language

The Portuguese language is a Romance language.  In linguistic terms, "Romance" comes from the word Roman and simply mean "from Latin."  Portuguese originated in the northern Portugal.  It spread world-wide in the 15th and 16th Centuries as Portugal established colonies around the world.

Portuguese is spoken in South America and parts of India and Macau in China and a first language on an island of Sri Lanka and a Creole-based Portuguese is spoken in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.  Portuguese is one of the world’s major languages, ranked 6th as between 177 and 191 million people are native Portuguese speakers.

Portuguese is the official language in eight countries.  Countries include
Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and Mozambique.  It is one of the official languages of Macau and East Timor.  It is the native language spoken in Portugal by 100% of population and in Brazil (100%), São Tomé and Príncipe (95%) and Angola (60%), and is the most widely spoken language in Mozambique (40%), though only 6.5% are native speakers.

According to UNESCO estimates, Portuguese and Spanish are the fastest-growing European languages.  Portuguese is the language with the highest potential for growth as an international language due to growth evident in southern Africa and South America.  It is estimated that by 2050, 83 million people will speak Portuguese in these African countries.

Administrative documents from the 9th century are the earliest surviving records of a distinctively Portuguese language.   From the 14th to the 16th century, explorers established Portuguese-speaking colonies in Asia, Africa and Americas.  The language continued to be popular in parts of Asia until the 19th century.  Even after being isolated from Portugal, some Portuguese-speaking Christian communities in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia continued to preserve the Portuguese language.

Standard Portuguese is based on the dialect of Lisbon. Dialectal variation in Portugal is limited, but the differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese are more extensive.  Although the majority of the Portuguese vocabulary comes from Latin, a number of words have also been absorbed from Arabic, French, and Italian, and also from some of the indigenous South American and African languages.
