Indonesian Language

Indonesian language, or Bahasa Indonesia, which literally means “the language of Indonesia” has been the official language since 1945 with passing of the Indonesian declaration of Independence.  It is spoken by nearly 100% of the 240 million people living in Indonesia.   Most Indonesians are also fluent in their local dialect such as Balinese or Javanese with is predominately used at home and in their daily social lives.   The Indonesian language is used in the media outlets, business and administrative purposes and taught in schools and universities.   The Indonesian language is modeled after Riau Malay, a form of Old Malay originally spoken in Northeast Sumatra.  It remains very similar to Malay with only slight differences attributed to Dutch and Javanese influences.  Examples of words borrowed from the Dutch include polisi (police), kualitas (quality), telepon (telephone), bis (bus).  Indonesian language was also influenced by the Portuguese, Chinese and Hindu languages.  Indonesian is also spoken in East Timor which was occupied by Indonesia from 1974 to 1999.

economic graph

Words in Bahasa are pronounced pretty much as they are written. In comparison to European languages, the grammar is relatively simple. The Indonesian language, at a beginner’s level, is one of the easiest languages to learn.  The language does not contain conjugation of verb tenses, nor participles, plural forms, articles, or gender distinctions.   These elements are also evident in the tonal languages of Chinese and Thai languages.  However, not a tonal language and utilising the Latin-based alphabet versus complex characters, the Indonesian language is regarded among the easiest languages to learn.

However, the absence of tenses in the Indonesian language is replaced with affixes.   Affixes are prefixes, infixes, suffixes and confixes which come with rules and exceptions.
